The challenge
Recent adjustments under Section 232 have made the import of steel, aluminium and other product groups markedly more expensive. Presidential proclamations have massively expanded both the categories of affected products and the levels of tariffs — in some cases up to 200 percent. At the same time, previous country- or product-specific exemptions have been abolished. Many companies now face increased workloads, complex regulations and high cost risks.
Correct tariff classification and obtaining complete origin proofs and supplier documentation is resource intensive. Without a functioning information system, there is a high risk of misclassification, incomplete data records and unnecessary punitive tariffs.
How does MCG create real value for your US imports?
Collaborative solution
Together with our clients we develop a tailor-made customs information system that combines technical analysis, documentation management and practical support. Core elements include:
- Structured collection and assessment of all customs and origin information
- Systematic communication with suppliers and authorities
- Training for purchasing, logistics and compliance teams
- Implementation of data-protection–compliant processes
- Ongoing updates on new proclamations and notifications from the US regulatory bodies
A practical example:
The aluminium components of our client, classified under HS Code 76, are subject to a base tariff of 15 percent. Initially, the required documentation was missing, resulting in a punitive tariff of 200 percent being applied to the full product value. With our support, all necessary proofs are now available, meaning the punitive tariff is only applied to the actual aluminium content — significantly reducing costs.
For a component valued at €150 containing 60 percent aluminium, the punitive tariff now amounts to just €45 instead of €300. This saving of €255 per component can quickly generate a substantial financial impact across a larger product portfolio. The cost of our documentation-management solution represents only a fraction of these savings — and delivers immediate, tangible value.
Achievement
By implementing the information system, companies can identify regulatory risks early and respond confidently to regulatory changes. A clear data foundation enables avoidance of unnecessary Section-232 surcharges and restores economic leeway.
The outcome: strengthened compliance, transparent supply chains and sustainably profitable US imports.
